Can GTA 6 win Game of the Year? The Game Awards 2026 eligibility, explained

The Game Awards' November 20 cutoff lands one day after GTA 6 launches, so Rockstar's game is eligible. Whether jurors can play it before ballots close is the real question.

Grand Theft Auto VI will have been in stores for a little over a day when the window closes. That’s how close Rockstar’s game is cutting it for this year’s Game of the Year race.

The short answer: yes, GTA 6 is eligible for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026. The show’s updated rules say games must be commercially available by Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9pm PT, and GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. That’s a margin of a single day.

Eligible isn’t the same as nominated, though. Nominees are picked by a jury of more than 100 outlets whose ballots are typically due before mid-November, and nobody outside Rockstar knows yet whether those jurors will get to play the game in time. That timing problem, not the cutoff, is what decides GTA 6’s chances this year.

Is GTA 6 eligible for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026?

It is, and there’s nothing Rockstar has to do about it. The Game Awards’ FAQ says there’s no submission process and no entry fee: every game that meets the release window is automatically eligible. The key line reads: “Games must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT.”

GTA 6 is set for Thursday, November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Even allowing for the game unlocking at different times around the world (our GTA 6 release time guide has the times by country), every region will have it well before 9pm Pacific the following evening.

Outlets spotted the cutoff on the updated FAQ around October 15 and 16, 2026. The exact date of the edit isn’t known. Vice reports that a public question from Alannah Pearce about whether GTA 6 would make the cutoff went viral.

The near miss is a product of GTA 6’s delays. In November 2025, Rockstar moved the game from May 26, 2026 to November 19. Had it kept the May date, nobody would be talking about cutoffs at all. Our GTA 6 release date guide covers the full history of the date.

Did The Game Awards change the rules for GTA 6?

No evidence suggests it did. TheGamer, whose headline calls the cutoff “conveniently” the day after GTA 6 arrives, notes that some fans floated a theory that Geoff Keighley would stretch the window to fit Rockstar’s game. The calendar doesn’t support it.

GTABoom points out that last year’s cutoff was November 21, 2025. A late-November cutoff on a Friday is simply where The Game Awards usually draws the line, and this year that Friday happens to fall the day after GTA 6’s Thursday launch.

The FAQ also undercuts the theory in a more basic way. Keighley isn’t a jury member and doesn’t vote on nominees or winners. Companies, Rockstar included, find out the nominees at the same time as the public. Our read: if GTA 6 gets nominated, it’ll be because more than 100 outlets put it on their ballots, not because of anything in the rulebook.

How The Game Awards jury picks Game of the Year nominees

This is where eligibility stops being the interesting part. The Game Awards’ FAQ says nominees in most categories “are chosen by an international jury of over 100 global media and influencer outlets.”

The mechanics work like this:

  1. Each outlet submits one confidential ballot per category, listing its top five games, unranked.
  2. That ballot is meant to reflect the opinion of the outlet’s whole editorial staff, not one writer.
  3. The five games that appear on the most ballots become the nominees.
  4. If there’s a tie, the category can have six or more nominees.

Wikipedia describes the Game of the Year jury as naming six games, while the FAQ’s base rule is five plus ties, so expect five or six Game of the Year nominees depending on how the votes fall.

The unranked ballot matters for a game like GTA 6. A juror doesn’t have to decide it’s the single best game of the year. It just has to make their top five. A game that appears on nearly every ballot beats one that only a handful of outlets pick. For a release with GTA’s profile, that’s a favorable system, provided jurors have actually played it.

Will reviewers have time to play GTA 6 before voting?

That depends on dates nobody has published. The Game Awards hasn’t announced its jury ballot deadline, and it hasn’t set an official date for the nominee announcement. According to Screen Rant, the show’s own date announcement said nominees would arrive “roughly mid-November.”

Put those together and the problem is obvious. If nominations are revealed in mid-November, jury ballots are due before that, and GTA 6 doesn’t launch until November 19. Jurors would have to judge the game before the public can buy it.

The rules allow for exactly that. The FAQ says publishers “may provide advance or pre-release access to games for critical evaluation” so outlets can meet balloting deadlines. Review copies or codes are permitted. So the path to a GTA 6 nomination runs through one decision: whether Rockstar sends early copies, and when.

Rockstar hasn’t said. It hasn’t announced a review embargo or confirmed review codes. TechWiser claims GTA 6 review codes are going out before the end of October, but it doesn’t name a source, and we haven’t seen any other outlet back it up. Treat it as a rumor until Rockstar or reviewers confirm it.

Even with early access, TweakTown argues that the roughly three weeks between launch and the December 10 ceremony could leave judges and voters only “limited time” with the game. That’s commentary, but it’s fair: a GTA story campaign isn’t something an editorial team finishes in a weekend.

The late-release problem has happened before

The Game Awards’ history isn’t kind to games that launch between the ballot deadline and the cutoff. Wikipedia notes that such games “are often overlooked,” and gives examples:

  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which fell into this gap and is the clearest precedent
  • Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales in 2020

None of those games had GTA’s cultural weight, and the analysis has limits: a GTA release is the kind of game publishers and outlets plan around months ahead. But the pattern is real. Being technically eligible hasn’t been enough for late games in the past.

How the Game of the Year winner is decided

Once nominees are set, the winner comes from a blend: 90% jury vote and 10% public fan vote. Fan voting closes on Wednesday, December 9, 2026, at 6pm PT, the evening before the show.

That split puts a limit on GTA 6’s fan power. Its audience could dominate the public vote, but the public vote is only a tenth of the result. If GTA 6 is nominated, it still has to win over the same jury of critics, who by then will have had three weeks with the finished game alongside everyone else.

What about the Players’ Voice award?

The fan-voted Players’ Voice category runs on a separate deadline. The FAQ says games for that award “must ship on or before November 30, 2026,” ten days after the main cutoff.

GTA 6 clears that comfortably, whatever happens with the jury. The FAQ doesn’t say how Players’ Voice nominees are picked, so we won’t guess; we’ll update this section if the show publishes more detail.

How have Rockstar’s games done at The Game Awards?

Neither GTA V nor Red Dead Redemption 2 has won Game of the Year at The Game Awards.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the main precedent. Rockstar’s own newswire announced that RDR2 was nominated in 8 categories at The Game Awards 2018, including Game of the Year. It lost the top prize to God of War. The full Game of the Year field that year, per Wikipedia:

Game Result
God of War Winner
Red Dead Redemption 2 Nominee
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Nominee
Celeste Nominee
Marvel’s Spider-Man Nominee
Monster Hunter: World Nominee

GTA V never had a shot at The Game Awards’ top prize as a new release, because the show didn’t exist yet. GTA V launched in 2013, and the first Game Awards ceremony was held on December 5, 2014. Collider notes that GTA V lost Game of the Year to The Last of Us in 2013, a loss that came at Spike’s VGAs, the show that preceded The Game Awards. Collider uses that history to argue GTA 6 could be the biggest game of the year without being crowned the best.

Our read: RDR2 shows the jury takes Rockstar seriously, since eight nominations is a strong showing. It also shows that a Rockstar release isn’t an automatic winner. GTA 6 arrives later in the voting cycle than RDR2 did, with less time for jurors to live with it, which makes a nomination harder and a win harder still.

Who could GTA 6 be up against?

GamingBible lists several other expected 2026 contenders: Resident Evil Requiem, 007 First Light, Crimson Desert, Control Resonant and Phantom Blade Zero. None of those are confirmed nominees either, because nobody is until the list is announced.

Last year’s winner was Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a reminder that the biggest launch of the year isn’t automatically the winner. A game that launched earlier in the year and that jurors have played to the end has a real advantage over one that arrives after ballots have likely closed.

Could a delay knock GTA 6 out of the running?

Yes, and the margin is thin. A slip of even two days would push GTA 6 past the November 20 cutoff for most categories. It would still have until November 30 for Players’ Voice.

Rockstar and Take-Two haven’t signaled any change. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was firm on the May 2026 earnings call, as Vice reported: “we’ve been really clear that we’re releasing the title on November 19.” The launch trailer then arrived on October 15 with the same date attached, and Rockstar doesn’t usually release a launch trailer for a date it isn’t sure of. Our GTA 6 launch trailer breakdown covers what it showed, and our everything we know page collects the rest of the pre-launch details. We’ll update this page if the date moves or if Rockstar announces review plans.

The PC version, whenever it comes, plays no part in the 2026 race: eligibility rests on the November 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC date has been officially announced, and our GTA 6 PC release date guide tracks the reports.

The short version

GTA 6 is eligible for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026 because it launches on November 19, 2026, one day before the November 20, 9pm PT cutoff, and the Players’ Voice deadline of November 30 gives it even more room. No rules were bent: last year’s cutoff was November 21, and Geoff Keighley doesn’t vote. A nomination is a different matter. It’s up to a jury of over 100 outlets whose ballots are likely due before launch, so GTA 6’s chances depend on whether Rockstar sends early review copies, which it hasn’t announced. Neither GTA V nor Red Dead Redemption 2 has won Game of the Year at The Game Awards; RDR2 was nominated in 2018 and lost to God of War. The answer arrives on December 10, 2026.
