GTA 6 preload: date, file size and how to download early on PS5 and Xbox
You can start downloading GTA 6 a full week before launch. Here's when preload opens, how big the download is likely to be, and how to make sure it's ready by November 19.

GTA 6 preload opens at midnight local time on Thursday, November 12, 2026, exactly one week before the game launches on November 19. That’s 27 days from now in your time zone. Preloading lets you download the full game in advance, so it’s ready to play the moment it unlocks instead of the moment your download finishes.
With a file size that’s likely to be bigger than almost anything else on your console, preloading isn’t optional if you want to play on launch night. Here’s everything you need to know.
When does GTA 6 preload start?
Rockstar’s support page confirms that digital pre-orders can be preloaded from midnight local time on November 12, 2026. Because it’s midnight local, preload opens at different moments around the world, in the same order as the launch itself: New Zealand first, then Australia, Asia, Europe, the UK and finally the Americas.
| Region | Preload opens (local) | UTC |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | 12:00 am Thu, Nov 12 | 11:00 Wed, Nov 11 |
| Sydney | 12:00 am Thu, Nov 12 | 13:00 Wed, Nov 11 |
| India | 12:00 am Thu, Nov 12 | 18:30 Wed, Nov 11 |
| Central Europe | 12:00 am Thu, Nov 12 | 23:00 Wed, Nov 11 |
| UK | 12:00 am Thu, Nov 12 | 00:00 Thu, Nov 12 |
| US Eastern | 12:00 am Thu, Nov 12 | 05:00 Thu, Nov 12 |
| US Pacific | 12:00 am Thu, Nov 12 | 08:00 Thu, Nov 12 |

How big is GTA 6?
Rockstar hasn’t announced an official file size, and as of mid-October 2026, neither the PlayStation Store nor the Microsoft Store lists one. The real number will show on the store page when preload opens, if not a little sooner.
Until then, every figure you see online is an estimate. The most common range is 150 to 200 GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X. That estimate comes from comparing GTA 6 with Rockstar’s last two games:
| Game | Approximate install size on current consoles |
|---|---|
| GTA 5 (PS5 and Xbox Series X and S) | Around 95 GB |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Around 120 GB |
| GTA 6 | Not announced. Estimates 150 to 200 GB |
GTA 6 is a much bigger and more detailed game than either, with a larger map, two playable characters and far more detailed cities, so a bigger install is a safe bet.
Ignore the viral file sizes
You’ve probably seen screenshots claiming much bigger numbers. A few that have done the rounds:
- “244.86 GB required”: a screenshot posted on Reddit. It hasn’t been verified by Rockstar or either store.
- “676.7 GB”: widely shared and debunked. It isn’t real.
- “Over 200 GB, from a leaked build”: a leaker’s claim about a development build. Development builds include debug files and uncompressed assets, so they’re usually much bigger than what ships.
None of these are official. Treat any number that doesn’t come from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store or Rockstar as a guess.
Will the Xbox Series S version be smaller?
Probably. The Series S runs games at lower resolutions, so it typically gets smaller texture files. Some outlets estimate 110 to 140 GB for Series S, but that’s not confirmed either. The bigger problem on Series S is the drive: it only has 512 GB, of which roughly 364 GB is usable, so GTA 6 could take up more than a third of it.
How much space should you clear?
Clear at least 200 GB before November 12. Here’s why that’s more than the download itself:
- The day-one patch. Almost every big release gets a patch on or just before launch day. Estimates for GTA 6 range from 15 to 50 GB.
- Installation headroom. Consoles need spare working space while they install and unpack files. If your drive is nearly full, a download can stall even if the final game would technically fit.
- Future updates. GTA 6 will keep getting patches after launch. Leaving some free space now saves you deleting things in a hurry later.
If the official size turns out to be smaller, you’ve lost nothing. If it’s bigger, you’ll be glad you planned ahead.
Quick ways to free up space
- Move older games to an external drive. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S let you store games on a USB drive and move them back later, which is much faster than downloading them again.
- Delete games you’ve finished. Your saves are kept on the console or in the cloud, so you won’t lose progress.
- Clear screenshots and video clips. Game captures add up fast, especially 4K video.
- Uninstall add-ons you don’t use, such as language packs or multiplayer content for games you only play offline.
On PS5, a game has to be installed on the internal drive or an M.2 SSD to play, not on a USB drive. Xbox Series X|S games need the internal drive or an official expansion card. USB storage works for holding games but not for playing them.
How to preload GTA 6 on PS5
- Pre-order the digital edition on the PlayStation Store, or redeem the code from a physical copy under Store, then the “…” menu, then Redeem code.
- Turn on downloads in rest mode. Go to Settings, then System, then Power saving, then Features available in rest mode. Turn on “Stay connected to the internet”.
- Check your library on November 12. GTA 6 should start downloading on its own. If it doesn’t, open it in your Game Library and select Download.
- Leave your PS5 in rest mode overnight. It will keep downloading, and install the day-one patch when it’s available.
How to preload GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S
- Pre-order on the Microsoft Store, or redeem a code from a physical copy at microsoft.com/redeem or in the Store app on your console.
- Set your power mode to Sleep. Go to Settings, then General, then Power options. Sleep mode lets the console keep downloading while it’s off.
- Check the queue on November 12. Open My games and apps, then Manage, then Queue, to make sure GTA 6 is downloading.
- Turn on automatic updates under Settings, then General, then Updates, so the day-one patch installs before launch.
You can also start a download remotely with the PlayStation App or the Xbox app on your phone, if you’re away from your console when preload opens.
Preloading the physical edition
The physical version of GTA 6 reportedly ships as a download code inside a box, rather than a game disc. That changes a few things:
- You can’t install from a disc, so there’s no shortcut around the download.
- You can preload once you’ve redeemed the code. If your copy arrives before November 12, redeem it right away so it’s ready to preload with everyone else.
- You can’t resell it or lend it out the way you could with a disc, because the code is tied to your account once redeemed.
If you’re buying physical mainly to avoid a huge download, it won’t help with GTA 6.
How long will the download take?
That depends entirely on your connection. As a rough guide, assuming a 150 GB download and a steady speed:
| Connection speed | Approximate time for 150 GB |
|---|---|
| 25 Mbps | About 13 hours |
| 50 Mbps | About 7 hours |
| 100 Mbps | About 3 hours 20 minutes |
| 300 Mbps | About 1 hour 10 minutes |
| 1 Gbps | About 20 minutes, if the servers keep up |
Real downloads are often slower on preload day, because millions of people start at the same moment. Starting late on November 12 or on November 13 can actually be quicker than starting at midnight.
A wired Ethernet connection is usually much faster and steadier than Wi-Fi, so plug your console in for this one if you can.
Can you play GTA 6 once preload finishes?
No. Preloading downloads the game files, but they stay locked until launch. GTA 6 is expected to unlock at midnight local time on November 19, 2026. When it unlocks, your console checks your license with PlayStation Network or Xbox Live, then lets you start.
Be signed in a few minutes before midnight on launch night. Servers tend to be busy, and being signed in early avoids getting stuck at the login screen.
Which edition should you preload?
Preload whichever edition you’ve bought. If you’re still deciding between the Standard Edition ($79.99) and the Ultimate Edition ($99.99), our GTA 6 price and editions guide compares them. You can reportedly upgrade from Standard to Ultimate after launch, so you won’t need to download the game again if you change your mind.
The bottom line
GTA 6 preload opens at midnight local time on Thursday, November 12, 2026. Rockstar hasn’t revealed the file size, but plan for a download of 150 to 200 GB and clear at least 200 GB of space before then. Turn on rest-mode or sleep-mode downloads, and the game will be ready to go the moment it unlocks on November 19.
We’ll update this article with the official file size for each console as soon as the stores show it. For the full picture of what’s confirmed so far, read everything we know about GTA 6.
