GTA 6 is finally close. After two delays and more than a decade since GTA 5, Rockstar’s next game launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That’s 34 days away in your time zone.

Rockstar has now released three trailers, a 26-minute gameplay showcase and a full launch trailer, and opened pre-orders. This guide brings together every confirmed detail: the story, the characters, the map of Leonida, gameplay, price, editions, preload, PC and online. Anything that comes from leaks or unconfirmed reports is labeled as such.

GTA 6 release date

GTA 6 releases on Thursday, November 19, 2026. That date has held since Rockstar announced it in November 2025, and Take-Two reaffirmed it on its 2026 earnings calls.

Getting here took two delays:

When announced Release window or date
December 2023 2025 (revealed with the first trailer)
May 2025 Moved to May 26, 2026
November 2025 Moved to November 19, 2026

When it announced the second delay, Rockstar said the extra time would let it finish the game with the level of polish players expect. Since then, every official signal has pointed to November 19, including a launch trailer released on October 15, 2026. Launch trailers are usually one of the last things a publisher produces before release.

What time does GTA 6 unlock?

Rockstar hasn’t confirmed an hour, but the PlayStation Store listing points to midnight local time. That means New Zealand gets it first, at 11:00 UTC on November 18, and the US West Coast is one of the last major regions, at 08:00 UTC on November 19. Our GTA 6 release time guide has a live table for more than 20 regions, converted to your time zone.

The story: Lucia and Jason

GTA 6 is the first mainline GTA built around two lead characters who are a couple, and the first 3D-era GTA with a female lead.

Lucia Caminos is introduced in the first trailer in a prison jumpsuit, and Rockstar’s own description frames her as someone who’s spent her life fighting to get ahead. She’s the first character we ever saw in GTA 6.

Jason Duval has spent most of his life around criminals and hustlers. In the October 2026 launch trailer, he hints at trouble during time in the army, and Kotaku’s read of the footage is that he’s turned to crime after leaving.

Rockstar’s official synopsis puts the two of them at the center of a criminal conspiracy that stretches across Leonida, forced into it after a job goes wrong. The trailers have shown them pulling robberies together, in a relationship that’s half romance and half partnership in crime, a clear nod to classic outlaw couples.

Like GTA 5, you can switch between the two protagonists. The August 2026 gameplay showcase showed character switching in action during missions.

The supporting cast

Rockstar’s official site has profiles for several supporting characters. Here’s who’s been confirmed so far:

Character Who they are
Cal Hampton Jason’s friend, an associate of Brian’s, and a conspiracy theorist
Brian Heder A veteran drug runner in the Leonida Keys, who Jason works for
Boobie Ike A Vice City local legend with business interests across the city, including the music label Only Raw Records
Dre’Quan Priest A music producer and Boobie’s partner in Only Raw Records
Real Dimez A rap duo, also signed to Only Raw Records
Raul Bautista A seasoned bank robber who recruits talent for risky jobs

That’s the cast Rockstar has chosen to introduce so far, not the game’s full character list. Expect many more when the game launches.

The map: Leonida and Vice City

GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida, Rockstar’s satirical take on Florida. It’s the series’ first return to Vice City, its version of Miami, since 2006’s GTA: Vice City Stories.

Rockstar has shown six regions so far:

  • Vice City. The main city, with its beaches, nightlife, downtown skyline and port. It’s the heart of the map.
  • Leonida Keys. A chain of islands off the southern tip of the state, based on the Florida Keys.
  • Grassrivers. Wetlands based on the Everglades, with airboats and alligators.
  • Port Gellhorn. A faded resort town on the Gulf coast.
  • Ambrosia. An inland industrial town built around a sugar refinery.
  • Mount Kalaga National Park. Forests, rivers and trails in the north of the state.

Rockstar hasn’t given an official map size, and leaked comparisons aren’t reliable. What’s clear from the footage is that Leonida is far more varied than Los Santos and Blaine County in GTA 5, mixing a dense city with swamps, islands, small towns and wilderness.

The real-world influences are everywhere in the trailers: the Overseas Highway–style bridges of the Keys, Miami Beach–style art deco, and plenty of viral “Florida Man” moments recreated in-game.

Gameplay: what the August showcase revealed

In August 2026, Rockstar released an extended gameplay look of roughly 26 minutes, captured on PS5. It’s the most detailed look at how GTA 6 plays. Here’s what it confirmed:

  • Missions with branching moments. The showcase opened on a drug pickup that goes wrong and turns into a shootout, showing how missions can escalate.
  • Cover-based shooting. Combat looks closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 than GTA 5, with more weight to movement and gunfights.
  • A focus system for people and animals. Holding L2 lets you engage directly with characters and animals in the world, much like Red Dead Redemption 2’s interaction system.
  • Character switching between Lucia and Jason, including during action.
  • Police chases across Leonida, with a reworked wanted system. Leaks have claimed the wanted level now goes up to six stars, but that hasn’t been confirmed by Rockstar.
  • Lots of side activities, including airboating, scooter riding, basketball and diving.

According to Red Bull’s coverage of the showcase, Rockstar also said the single-player game launches without microtransactions, and that no generative AI was used in its development.

Social media inside the game

A big theme in every trailer is social media. Leonida is full of people filming, livestreaming and posting, and the trailers are packed with in-game clips that parody real viral videos. Rockstar has used this as a storytelling device in the trailers, and it’s likely to be part of how the game reacts to what you do.

The trailers

Trailer Released Length Highlights
Trailer 1 December 2023 About 90 seconds Lucia’s reveal, Vice City and the 2025 window. Released a day early after it leaked
Trailer 2 May 2025 About 2 minutes 45 seconds Jason’s introduction and much more of the story
Extended gameplay look August 2026 About 26 minutes The first long look at gameplay
Launch trailer October 15, 2026 About 90 seconds Focus on Lucia and Jason, Justice’s new score

The first trailer broke YouTube’s record for the most views of a non-music video in 24 hours. The launch trailer was much shorter than the August showcase, and ends with a narrator saying the game’s name, plus the launch date and age rating, a strong sign it’s built for TV and cinema ads.

The music

French electronic duo Justice is composing the original score for GTA 6. The launch trailer debuted a new Justice track, “Flower in a Hurricane”, featuring Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, according to coverage of the trailer. As with every GTA, expect licensed music across a range of in-game radio stations too.

Price and editions

GTA 6 has two editions:

  • Standard Edition: $79.99 / €79.99. The full game.
  • Ultimate Edition: $99.99 / €99.99. The full game plus exclusive vehicles, weapons, clothing and extra side missions.

There’s no Special or Collector’s Edition. Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, and both editions include the Vintage Vice City Pack as a pre-order bonus. You can reportedly upgrade from Standard to Ultimate after launch.

Take-Two has described pre-order sales as unprecedented on its earnings calls, according to Variety.

For the full comparison, including whether Ultimate is worth it and the catch with the physical edition, read our GTA 6 price and editions guide.

Preload and file size

Preload opens at midnight local time on November 12, 2026, a week before launch, according to Rockstar’s support page. It’s available for digital pre-orders and redeemed physical codes.

Rockstar hasn’t announced a file size. Most estimates are in the 150 to 200 GB range on PS5 and Xbox Series X. We recommend clearing at least 200 GB to leave room for a day-one patch. Our preload guide explains how to set up your console so the download and patch finish before launch.

The physical edition has no disc

The physical version of GTA 6 reportedly comes as a download code in a box. That means even physical buyers need to download the full game, and it works on disc-less consoles like the PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S. It also means you can’t resell or lend it after redeeming the code.

Platforms: PS5, Xbox and PC

GTA 6 launches on:

  • PS5 and PS5 Pro
  • Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S

It isn’t coming to PS4 or Xbox One, and there’s no PC version at launch.

When is GTA 6 coming to PC?

Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC version. GamesBeat reported on October 13, 2026 that it’s planned for Q1 2027, citing four sources. But Take-Two’s release list for its fiscal year ending March 2027 includes only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Historically, Rockstar’s PC releases have come much later: GTA 5 took about 19 months and Red Dead Redemption 2 about a year. Our GTA 6 PC release date article breaks down both sides.

GTA Online and multiplayer

This is one of the biggest open questions. Rockstar hasn’t detailed a new GTA Online for GTA 6. According to Red Bull’s coverage of the August showcase, Rockstar has made it clear that GTA 6 launches as a single-player experience, with a multiplayer mode expected to follow later.

That would echo GTA 5, where GTA Online launched about two weeks after the main game, and Red Dead Redemption 2, where Red Dead Online arrived in beta about a month after launch.

Since 2022, Rockstar has also offered GTA+, a subscription for GTA Online on console. Some reports say digital pre-orders of GTA 6 include a free month of GTA+, but what it will include for GTA 6 hasn’t been spelled out.

Development: eight years in the making

GTA 6 has been in development for about eight years, one of the longest productions in the industry. In an October 2026 interview reported by India TV News, Rockstar said its next game after GTA 6 should arrive faster.

The game’s development has had some dramatic moments:

  • The 2022 leak. In September 2022, around 90 videos of early development footage were leaked online. Rockstar confirmed the leak and said it wouldn’t affect development.
  • The early trailer. The first trailer was released a day early in December 2023, after a low-quality copy leaked online.
  • Two delays in 2025, first to May 2026, then to November 2026.

What we still don’t know

Five weeks out, there’s still a lot Rockstar hasn’t said:

  • The exact unlock hour. Midnight local is expected but not confirmed.
  • The file size, which should appear on the store pages around preload.
  • Story length, and how many missions there are.
  • The full map size and whether more regions will be revealed.
  • GTA Online’s launch date and how it will work.
  • PS5 Pro enhancements. Rockstar hasn’t detailed a PS5 Pro mode.
  • PC release date and system requirements.
  • Cheats. Every main GTA game has had them, but Rockstar hasn’t said whether GTA 6 does.

We’ll update this article as soon as any of these are confirmed.

GTA 6 launch checklist

If you’re planning to play on day one, here’s what to do and when:

  1. Now: Decide on an edition and pre-order. Pre-ordering before November 19 gets you the Vintage Vice City Pack. See our editions guide.
  2. Before November 12: Clear at least 200 GB of storage on your console. See our file size guide.
  3. November 12: Preload opens at midnight local time. Leave your console in rest mode or sleep mode so it downloads overnight.
  4. November 18: Check that the download and any day-one patch have finished.
  5. November 19: Be signed in a few minutes before midnight local time. Check exactly when it unlocks for you.

The bottom line

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Lucia and Jason at the center of a conspiracy across the state of Leonida. The Standard Edition is $79.99, preload opens on November 12, and a PC version is reported for early 2027 but not confirmed.
