# GTA 6 needs up to 212GB: how to free up space on PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S before pre-load

> Pre-load opens November 10 with a download of up to 212GB. Here's what that means on each console, what to delete or move, which storage upgrades let you play, and how long the download will take on your connection.

Rockstar just gave GTA 6 players two extra days, and a homework assignment to go with them. On **November 3, 2026**, the studio announced that pre-load opens on **November 10**, earlier than the November 12 date it had given before, and that the download is **up to 212GB**.

That figure is the whole story for a lot of people. PlayStation Blog's advice was blunt: "Get ready by clearing a minimum of 212GB of storage space on your PS5." On a launch PS5 that's about a third of your usable space. On an Xbox Series S it's more than half.

You have about six days to make room. This guide covers what 212GB means on each console, what to delete or move first, which storage upgrades let you actually play the game, and how long the download will take on your connection. For the pre-load timetable on its own, our [GTA 6 preload guide](/gta-6-preload/) has every date and time.

**GTA 6 storage at a glance**

| | |
|---|---|
| Download size | Up to 212GB, may change depending on device |
| PS5 pre-load | November 10, 2026, midnight local time |
| Xbox pre-load | November 10, 2026, 12am GMT (7pm ET on November 9) |
| Launch | November 19, 2026, midnight local time |
| PS5 825GB usable space | About 667GB, so GTA 6 takes roughly 32% (reported) |
| Series S usable space | About 364GB, so GTA 6 takes roughly 58% (reported) |
| Day-one patch size | Not announced |
| Physical copies | Code in box, no disc (reported) |

## How many GB is GTA 6?

The official answer is **up to 212GB**. Rockstar says the size "may change depending on your device," according to Pure Xbox, which is why both Sony and the press are telling everyone to clear at least 212GB rather than a specific per-console number.

What Rockstar hasn't said matters just as much. It hasn't confirmed whether the PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S versions differ in size, whether the Series S build is smaller, or how big a day-one patch will be. Sony's own wording is "a minimum" of 212GB, and our read is that you should take that word seriously.

The number didn't come out of nowhere. Notebookcheck reported claims in October that a development build had passed 200GB, and the PlayStation Game Size database reportedly listed the PS5 version at **210GB**, according to Notebookcheck. The outlet points out that the leak landed "just 2 GB below" Rockstar's official maximum.

## What the pre-load change means

Pre-load was originally set for November 12, a date Rockstar had confirmed in its pre-order announcement. It has now moved to **November 10**, and the two platforms start differently:

| Platform | Pre-load opens | How it rolls out |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | November 10, midnight local time | Time zone by time zone, starting with New Zealand |
| Xbox Series X\|S | November 10, 12am GMT | One global moment for everyone |

That single Xbox start means North American players get in on the evening of **Monday, November 9**: 4pm PT, 5pm MT, 6pm CT or 7pm ET. In the UK and Ireland it's midnight, in central Europe 1am CET, and in Australia 11am AEDT, per Pure Xbox. The game itself unlocks at midnight local time on **November 19**. Our [GTA 6 release time guide](/gta-6-release-time/) breaks down launch night by country.

PlayStation Blog notes that pre-download is for people who pre-order. Thurrott's reading of the change is that it gives players on slower connections about a week to get the game down, which is exactly how you should treat it.

## How much space GTA 6 leaves on each console

A console's box size is never what you get. System software takes its share, so the number that matters is the usable space your storage screen reports. Here's how a 212GB install lands on each model, using reported usable figures and assuming exactly 212GB with no patch:

| Console | Usable space (reported) | Left after GTA 6 | GTA 6 share |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5, 825GB | About 667GB | About 455GB | About 32% |
| Xbox Series X, 1TB | About 802GB | About 590GB | About 26% |
| Xbox Series S, 512GB | About 364GB | About 152GB | About 58% |

The Series X and Series S figures come from Thurrott; the PS5 figure is cited by World Today News. Reported usable figures for 1TB PS5 models weren't in the coverage we reviewed, and on any console the real number shifts with system updates and installed apps. Before you delete anything, check what your own console says.

### PS5 owners: a third of the drive

On the original 825GB PS5, GTA 6 takes roughly a third of the usable space. That leaves about 455GB, enough for a handful of big games alongside it. If your console is already nearly full, though, you'll have to clear a lot: two or three large installs could easily stand between you and the pre-load. If you're wondering whether the PS5 Pro changes anything, Rockstar hasn't said it gets a different file size; our [GTA 6 PS5 Pro guide](/gta-6-ps5-pro/) covers what's been said about performance.

### Xbox Series X: the most room

The Series X is in the best shape here. At about 26% of usable space, GTA 6 is a big guest but not a takeover. The disc-free Series X model hasn't been addressed separately by Rockstar.

### Xbox Series S: the real squeeze

The Series S is where this gets uncomfortable, and Thurrott says the size is "more likely to be an issue" there. After a 212GB install you'd have around 152GB left for everything else. Keep a large shooter installed as well, such as Call of Duty: Warzone, which Thurrott puts at over 100GB, and you're down to very little free space. If a day-one patch needs room on top of that, Series S owners with a busy drive could hit trouble on launch night.

## Why GTA 6 is so big

Rockstar hasn't explained the size. Our read: it's scale. GTA 6 covers an entire state, from Vice City's streets to the swamps, Keys and mountain parks on our [GTA 6 map](/gta-6-map/), and a world that size takes room.

<Shot id="kalaga-canyon-road" />

The reported figures for Rockstar's two previous big open worlds put 212GB in context:

| Game | Reported install size |
|---|---|
| GTA V | Around 90GB initially, per reporting cited by World Today News |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Around 150GB, per World Today News |
| GTA 6 | Up to 212GB, confirmed by Rockstar |

Treat the older figures as rough guides, since sizes vary by platform and grow with patches. On those two data points alone, GTA 6 is more than double GTA V's reported initial size and roughly 60GB more than Red Dead Redemption 2.

There's one more reason the size matters more than usual. Thurrott reports that GTA 6 is the first game in the series to be **digital-only**, and VideoCardz says physical editions have no disc and no printed map. Even if you buy a box, you get a code, and the full 212GB has to come down your connection. A poster of the artwork and map is a free download at launch, with a printed copy sold separately for **$0.99**, according to Pure Xbox and Push Square.

## What to delete or move first: a clean-up checklist

You don't need to wipe your console. You need a plan. Work through this in order and stop once you have comfortably more than 212GB free:

1. **Check your storage screen.** Note your free space and sort installs by size. The biggest games are usually the quickest win.
2. **Delete games you've finished.** Digital purchases can be downloaded again later. Check that a game's saves are backed up before you remove it.
3. **Move rather than delete where you can.** A USB drive can store current-gen games you want to keep but aren't playing (see the next section). Moving a game back can be quicker than re-downloading it, depending on your connection.
4. **Clear old captures.** Screenshots and video clips build up quietly, and long recordings take more space than you'd expect.
5. **Remove extras you don't use.** Language packs, optional high-resolution packs and multiplayer modes you never touch can sometimes be uninstalled separately.
6. **Leave headroom.** Our advice: aim for well over 212GB free, not exactly 212GB. Rockstar says the size can vary by device, and nobody has confirmed the day-one patch size.

Series S owners should be the most aggressive here. With only around 364GB usable, deciding what else stays installed through November is a real choice.

## Can you play GTA 6 from external storage?

Be careful here. Rockstar hasn't published any GTA 6-specific external storage rules. What follows are the standard platform rules, which we haven't been able to verify against Sony's and Microsoft's support pages for this guide, so check those pages before you buy anything.

### PS5: store on USB, play from M.2

Under Sony's standard rules, a USB extended-storage drive can **store** PS5 games, but **PS5 games can't be played from USB**. You have to move them back to internal storage to play.

The upgrade that does let you play is an **M.2 NVMe SSD** in the console's expansion slot. Sony's standard requirements for expansion drives include a PCIe Gen4 M.2 SSD, with a heatsink recommended. PlayStation Blog links directly to [Sony's PS5 extended-storage page](https://www.playstation.com/support/hardware/ps5-extended-storage/) in its GTA 6 post, so that's the place to confirm compatibility and sizes before ordering a drive.

### Xbox Series X|S: expansion card or internal only

On Xbox, Series X|S games are expected to need the internal SSD or an official **Storage Expansion Card** to play. A standard USB 3 hard drive or SSD can **hold** Series X|S games but not run them, so you'd move GTA 6 back before playing. We're not quoting expansion card prices, so check current retail listings.

### What this means for you

The practical upshot for both platforms is the same: a cheap USB drive is a parking space, not a garage. Use it to park the games you're not playing so GTA 6 can live on internal storage. Only an M.2 SSD on PS5 or an expansion card on Xbox adds space you can actually play GTA 6 from.

Cloud play isn't an escape route either. Neither Rockstar nor the platform holders have announced a cloud streaming option, and no PC version has been announced; our [GTA 6 PC release date guide](/gta-6-pc-release-date/) tracks the reports. Older consoles are out entirely, as our [PS4 and Xbox One explainer](/gta-6-ps4/) covers.

## How long will the GTA 6 download take?

Space is only half the problem. 212GB is a lot of data to pull through a home connection, and this is where the extra two days earn their keep. These are our own estimates for a 212GB download. The "ideal" column assumes your full line speed the whole time; the "realistic" column assumes about 80% of it, which is closer to what most homes see.

| Connection speed | Ideal | Realistic (about 80%) |
|---|---|---|
| 25 Mbps | 18h 50m | About 23h 30m |
| 50 Mbps | 9h 25m | About 11h 45m |
| 100 Mbps | 4h 42m | About 5h 55m |
| 150 Mbps | 3h 08m | About 3h 55m |
| 300 Mbps | 1h 34m | About 1h 57m |
| 500 Mbps | 56m | About 1h 10m |
| 1 Gbps | 28m | About 35m |

Server load can push these numbers higher, especially in the first hours after the Xbox pre-load opens at one moment for the whole world. Download speeds over Wi-Fi are often lower than your plan's headline speed, so a wired connection is the safer choice if your console is near the router.

If your connection is under 50Mbps, start the pre-load as soon as it opens. At 25Mbps you're looking at a full day, and you don't want to find out on November 18 that the download stalled.

### Watch your data cap

The full 212GB counts against any monthly data allowance. On a capped plan, that alone could use up a big share of your month, before any day-one patch. Check your plan now, and time the download for an off-peak or unmetered window if your provider has one.

## Pre-ordered a boxed copy? Check your dates

Retail copies are code-in-box, and the coverage is less clear here. VGC reports that "code-in-box versions will go live on November 12," while Thurrott says code-in-box copies should be available from Amazon and other retailers from that date. Both are describing November 12, which is also the old pre-load date, so don't assume a boxed code will let you pre-load from November 10.

If you bought a boxed copy, plan for a big download landing later than digital buyers, and make sure your storage is clear well before the code arrives. If you haven't bought yet, our [GTA 6 editions and price guide](/gta-6-editions-price/) compares the **$79.99** Standard and **$99.99** Ultimate editions. The Ultimate Edition is available to pre-order on the PS Store, according to PlayStation Blog. Rockstar hasn't said whether the editions differ in size.

<Shot id="ultimate-edition-box" />

One last warning: the only places to get GTA 6 are the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store and participating retailers. Anything promising a smaller "compressed" download or an early free copy is a scam, as our [GTA 6 free download guide](/gta-6-download/) explains.

## The short version

GTA 6 is a download of **up to 212GB**, and pre-load now opens on **November 10, 2026**: midnight local time on PS5, and **12am GMT** on Xbox Series X|S (7pm ET on November 9). Based on reported figures, that's about **32%** of a launch PS5's usable space, **26%** of a Series X and **58%** of a Series S, which leaves Series S owners only around 152GB for everything else. Clear more than 212GB to allow for an unconfirmed day-one patch, use USB drives to park other games rather than to play GTA 6, and start the download early if your connection is slow or capped. The game launches on **November 19, 2026**, and we'll update this page if Rockstar confirms per-console sizes or a patch.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much storage space does GTA 6 need?

Rockstar says the download is up to 212GB and may change depending on your device. PlayStation Blog advises clearing a minimum of 212GB on PS5. Rockstar hasn't confirmed a separate size for each console or the size of any day-one patch.

### Will GTA 6 fit on the Xbox Series S?

Yes, but it takes most of the console. Thurrott reports the 512GB Series S has about 364GB of usable space, so a 212GB install uses roughly 58% of it and leaves about 152GB for everything else.

### When does the GTA 6 pre-load start?

November 10, 2026, two days earlier than the November 12 date announced before. On PS5 it opens at midnight local time. On Xbox Series X|S it opens at 12am GMT worldwide, which is 7pm ET on November 9 in North America.

### Can I play GTA 6 from a USB external drive?

Under standard PS5 and Xbox Series X|S rules, current-gen games can be stored on USB drives but must be moved to internal storage, a PS5 M.2 SSD or an Xbox Storage Expansion Card to play. Rockstar hasn't said anything different for GTA 6.

### How long will the GTA 6 download take?

By our estimates, about 5 to 6 hours on a 100Mbps connection, around 12 hours on 50Mbps and close to a full day on 25Mbps. Gigabit connections can finish in well under an hour if servers keep up.

### Does the physical version of GTA 6 come on a disc?

No. According to Thurrott and VideoCardz, boxed copies contain a download code rather than a disc, so every player needs the full download and the storage space for it.
