# GTA 6 reviews: the reported November 18 embargo, what's confirmed, and whether to wait before buying

> Insiders say Rockstar started sending GTA 6 review codes on October 26, with reviews due November 18. Rockstar hasn't confirmed it, a viral watermark claim has been disputed, and the pre-order bonus rules mean waiting for reviews won't cost you the bonus.

The most useful date on the GTA 6 calendar might not be November 19. It might be the day before.

According to insider **NateTheHate**, Rockstar began sending **GTA 6 review code** to media outlets on **October 26, 2026**, with a **review embargo of November 18**. That's a Wednesday, one day before the game launches on **Thursday, November 19**. Insider Gaming says it independently verified the date. **Rockstar hasn't confirmed any of it.**

If the report is right, you'll get roughly 24 hours to read the verdicts before launch. A quirk of Rockstar's own pre-order rules matters even more: if you wait until reviews are out, you don't lose the pre-order bonus.

## When is the GTA 6 review embargo?

The short answer is **November 18, 2026**, with a large asterisk. The date comes from NateTheHate, whose post on X read, in part: "Review embargo is November 18th." Dot Esports reported it on the afternoon of October 26 and stressed that the claim isn't official and should be treated as a rumor.

The report picked up weight quickly. GameWatcher and Beebom both relayed that **Insider Gaming** independently verified the November 18 date. That's two separate sources pointing at the same day, which is about as solid as pre-launch information gets without a statement from Rockstar.

What nobody has nailed down is the time. Dot Esports estimates the embargo lifts at **roughly 6am to 7am ET on November 18**, which would line up with a typical morning publishing slot for US outlets. One aggregator site has floated other windows, including one just after midnight on November 19, but its claims don't trace back to a named insider with a track record. Our read: plan around November 18 and treat any specific hour as a guess until reviews actually start appearing.

Rockstar's own channels have said nothing. An October 29 Newswire post about the [original score by Justice](/gta-6-original-score-justice/) doesn't mention reviews. Neither did the August post for the extended gameplay look.

## When were GTA 6 review codes sent out?

Codes reportedly started reaching outlets on **October 26**. Notebookcheck reports outlets got "just over three weeks" with the game. KeenGamer reported the same timing.

Three weeks is a reasonable window for a game of this size, but not a generous one. GTA games are long, and a reviewer who wants to finish the story and spend time in the open world has a lot to get through. That's worth remembering when you read the first wave of reviews: some outlets may publish a full verdict on day one, while others may hold back or update later.

Several questions remain open. Rockstar hasn't said **which outlets and creators received codes**, whether **everyone shares the same embargo**, or whether there are any **launch-day restrictions** on what reviewers can show. The reports so far cover the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. A PC version still hasn't been announced, so there won't be PC reviews at launch. Our [GTA 6 PC release date guide](/gta-6-pc-release-date/) tracks that separately.

## Are GTA 6 review copies watermarked?

This is the claim that went viral, and it now looks wrong.

On October 27, a claim from ManaByte spread across social media and gaming sites: review copies supposedly displayed the **reviewer's name in a flashing on-screen watermark**, so any leaked footage could be traced back to its source. Beebom and KeenGamer both ran the story. Beebom's version included **Tom Henderson** describing personalized watermarks as fairly standard practice, which many readers took as confirmation.

Then the story fell apart. NateTheHate posted that "Review copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 are not watermarked," as quoted by GTABoom. Henderson also said that after looking into it, the watermark claim didn't hold up. Outlets date the pushback anywhere from **October 29 to 31**; GTABoom's timeline puts NateTheHate's denial on October 29.

Henderson didn't say security was relaxed, though. According to Notebookcheck, he said Rockstar has "some insane security measures in place." What those measures are hasn't been reported.

That matters because tight review security tends to come with tight leak control. GameWatcher frames Rockstar's caution against the background of earlier gameplay leaks. Our read is that you're unlikely to see legitimate review footage before the embargo lifts. Anything claiming to be a leaked review before November 18 deserves heavy suspicion.

## Should you wait for GTA 6 reviews before buying?

For most people, waiting won't cost you the bonus, and that's down to how Rockstar set up the pre-order rules.

The pre-order announcement says **all pre-orders and all purchases made before November 20, 2026** get the **Vintage Vice City Pack**. Buying on November 18, after reviews land, or on launch day itself still counts. The one extra that's tied to pre-ordering specifically is a free, instantly redeemable **month of GTA+** for **digital pre-orders**. If you want that, you'd need to pre-order before launch, and you can still do it on November 18 with the reviews open in another tab. The bonus wording could vary slightly between stores, so check the store page before you buy.

The one thing waiting does cost you is a head start on the download. Preload opens on **November 10**, six days before the reported embargo, and the file is reportedly about **210 GB on PS5**, according to KeenGamer and GameWatcher. If you buy on November 18, you'll be downloading the whole game in the final hours before launch. Our [GTA 6 preload guide](/gta-6-preload/) covers storage and timing.

Here's a practical way to think about it:

- **You've already decided:** pre-order, preload from November 10, and read the reviews for fun.
- **You're unsure:** wait for reviews on November 18, then buy digitally that day and start the download straight away.
- **You're buying physical:** the box contains a download code, and the physical edition is available from November 12, two days after digital preloading opens on November 10.

If you've already pre-ordered and are having second thoughts, check the cancellation terms on the store where you bought it. PlayStation, Xbox and the Rockstar Games Store each set their own rules, and we haven't verified the current terms for this release. Prices for both editions are in our [GTA 6 editions and price guide](/gta-6-editions-price/).

## How the reported dates fit together

Put the confirmed and reported dates side by side and the squeeze becomes clear: the download comes first, then the reviews, then the game.

| Date | What happens | Status |
|---|---|---|
| October 26, 2026 | Review codes reportedly start going out | Reported |
| October 27, 2026 | Watermark claim spreads | Disputed |
| October 29 to 31, 2026 | NateTheHate and Henderson dispute the watermark claim | Reported |
| November 10, 2026 | Digital preload opens | Confirmed |
| November 12, 2026 | Physical edition available | Reported |
| November 18, 2026 | Review embargo lifts | Reported |
| November 19, 2026 | GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X\|S | Confirmed |
| November 20, 2026 | Pre-order bonus window closes for new purchases | Confirmed |

GameWatcher points out that players would have just one day to digest reviews before launch. That's a tight window, and it puts more weight on the first wave of reviews. We'll add a comparison with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 once we've verified their review dates. For exact unlock times by country on November 19, see our [GTA 6 release time guide](/gta-6-release-time/).

## How to read GTA 6 reviews when they land

Dot Esports expects Metacritic and OpenCritic scores to appear within hours of the embargo lifting. Those early numbers deserve some caution. The first averages come from whoever publishes first, and they can move as slower outlets, or those still finishing a long game, add their reviews over the following days.

The score also won't tell you much on its own. These questions are worth reading the full text for:

- **Performance on your console.** Look for notes on the standard PS5 and the Xbox Series S, not only higher-end hardware. Our [GTA 6 PS5 Pro guide](/gta-6-ps5-pro/) covers what's known about frame rates so far.
- **Bugs and stability.** Did the reviewer hit crashes or broken missions, and was a patch mentioned?
- **How far they got.** A reviewer who finished the story is giving you a different verdict from one who didn't.
- **Spoiler policy.** Some outlets will discuss story beats. Check the intro before you scroll.

Reading three or four reviews from outlets with different tastes will tell you more than any single number.

## How to spot fake GTA 6 reviews and leaks

The weeks before a launch this big attract fake content, and the watermark episode shows how fast an unverified claim can spread. Be skeptical of:

- **"Reviews" posted before the embargo**, especially with no outlet named
- **Screenshots of scores** with no link to the actual review
- **Reviews on lookalike domains** imitating well-known gaming sites
- **Scores from accounts with no history**
- **Clickbait built on the watermark story**, now that it's been disputed
- **Claims that cite an unnamed insider** rather than someone on the record

NateTheHate and Tom Henderson have been the most closely watched sources on this story. GTABoom calls NateTheHate a stronger source for Rockstar news. Even so, it's a report, not a press release.

Fake links often travel with fake reviews. If a post promises early access or a free copy, it's a scam, and our [GTA 6 free download guide](/gta-6-download/) explains how those work.

## The short version

GTA 6 reviews are reportedly due on **November 18, 2026**, one day before the game launches on **November 19** on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. NateTheHate reported the date, Insider Gaming says it verified it, and codes reportedly went out on **October 26**. **Rockstar hasn't confirmed** the date or time, and the viral claim about watermarked review copies has been disputed. Waiting for reviews won't cost you the bonus: purchases made before **November 20** still get the Vintage Vice City Pack. The real trade-off is the download, because preload opens on **November 10**, well before any reviews. We'll update this page if Rockstar confirms the embargo.

## Frequently asked questions

Nobody official has said. Dot Esports puts it at roughly 6am to 7am ET on November 18, but that estimate isn't confirmed. Treat the exact time as unknown until outlets publish.

### Are GTA 6 review copies watermarked?

Probably not. A viral claim said review copies show a flashing watermark with the reviewer's name. NateTheHate and Tom Henderson both disputed it, though Henderson said Rockstar has other strict security measures in place.

### Will I lose the pre-order bonus if I wait for reviews?
