Is GTA 6 coming to PS4, Xbox One or Switch 2? Every platform explained

GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 and later came to three more console generations. GTA 6 is different: it's current-gen only. Here's every platform's status and what to do if you're still on a PS4 or Xbox One.

GTA 6 isn’t coming to PS4 or Xbox One. It’s being released only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, on November 19, 2026. If you’re still on a last-generation console, you’ll need to upgrade to play it.

That’s a big change from GTA 5, which launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 back in 2013 and went on to appear on two more console generations. Here’s every platform’s status, why GTA 6 left older consoles behind, and the cheapest ways to get ready.

Why isn’t GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?

Rockstar hasn’t explained it in detail, but the reasons are clear from what the game is doing:

  • Fast SSD storage. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have fast SSDs that can stream huge amounts of detail as you move. PS4 and Xbox One use much slower hard drives.
  • CPU power. GTA 6’s dense crowds, traffic, wildlife and physics need far more processing power than the PS4 and Xbox One’s CPUs can provide.
  • Scale and detail. Leonida is reported to be around twice the size of GTA 5’s map, with far more detail per block. Fitting that onto 2013 hardware would mean major cuts.
  • Age. The PS4 and Xbox One launched in 2013, the same year as GTA 5. By November 2026, they’ll be 13 years old.

Even on current consoles, GTA 6 is reported to run at 30fps during development, according to Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson. Last-gen hardware would struggle to run it at all.

Is GTA 6 on PS4 through cloud streaming?

Not officially. GTA 6 hasn’t been announced for PlayStation’s cloud streaming or Xbox Cloud Gaming. Some big games have reached older consoles or phones through streaming, but there’s no sign of that for GTA 6 at launch.

Be very careful with anything claiming to offer “GTA 6 for PS4”, including download codes, modded firmware or streaming apps. They’re scams. Our GTA 6 free download guide explains how they work.

Is GTA 6 coming to Nintendo Switch 2?

Nothing has been announced. Here’s where things stand:

  • Nintendo’s position: In an interview with Variety, Nintendo of America’s president Devon Pritchard said the question belongs to Take-Two and Rockstar, and that there was nothing to announce.
  • Rumors: Reports in late 2025 claimed Rockstar had tested GTA 6 on Switch 2 hardware. A later rumor of a day-one Switch 2 release was disputed by the leaker who first reported it.
  • Precedent: Testing on hardware doesn’t mean a release. Rockstar reportedly tested GTA 5 on the Wii U, and that version never came out.

A Switch 2 version later in GTA 6’s life isn’t impossible, but don’t buy a Switch 2 expecting it.

What about GTA 6 on PC and mobile?

  • PC: Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC version. A GamesBeat report says it’s planned for the first quarter of 2027. See our GTA 6 PC release date article.
  • Mobile: GTA 6 isn’t coming to Android or iOS. Any GTA 6 APK or app is fake. See is GTA 6 on mobile?

Should you upgrade to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S for GTA 6?

If you want to play GTA 6 at launch, yes, you’ll need a current-generation console. Here are the options, from cheapest to most expensive:

Console Disc drive Storage Good for GTA 6?
Xbox Series S No 512 GB (about 364 GB usable) or 1 TB Yes, but storage is tight
PS5 Digital Edition No (optional add-on) About 825 GB to 1 TB Yes
PS5 with disc drive Yes About 825 GB to 1 TB Yes
Xbox Series X Yes 1 TB or 2 TB Yes
PS5 Pro No (optional add-on) 2 TB Yes, the most powerful option

Console prices vary by country and have changed several times since launch, so check current prices at major retailers before you buy.

You don’t need a disc drive for GTA 6

The physical edition of GTA 6 reportedly comes as a download code in a box, not a disc. That means a digital-only console like the PS5 Digital Edition or Xbox Series S can play the physical version too. There’s no reason to pay extra for a disc drive just for GTA 6.

Watch out for storage on Xbox Series S

GTA 6’s file size hasn’t been announced, but estimates range from 150 to 200 GB. The 512 GB Series S has about 364 GB of usable space, so GTA 6 could take up half of it. If you’re buying a Series S, the 1 TB model, or an expansion card, will save you a lot of deleting. See our GTA 6 file size guide.

Ways to save money on the upgrade

  1. Trade in your PS4 or Xbox One. Retailers often give credit toward a new console, especially around big launches.
  2. Look for bundles. Console bundles around November sometimes include games or extra storage.
  3. Consider refurbished. Official refurbished consoles from Sony, Microsoft or major retailers usually come with a warranty.
  4. Choose digital-only. Since GTA 6’s physical edition is reportedly a download code, a digital console works just as well.
  5. Check Black Friday. GTA 6 launches the week before Black Friday, when console discounts are common.

Will your PS4 or Xbox One saves carry over?

There’s nothing to carry over. GTA 6 is a brand-new game, so there are no PS4 or Xbox One saves for it. Your PS4 games will still play on a PS5 through backward compatibility, and most Xbox One games play on Xbox Series X|S too.

If you play GTA 5 or GTA Online on PS4 or Xbox One, you can move your GTA Online character to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version of GTA 5. Rockstar hasn’t said anything about carrying GTA Online progress into GTA 6.

GTA 6 on PS5 vs Xbox Series X vs Series S

All three run the same game, with the same story, map and content. The differences are in performance and storage:

PS5 Xbox Series X Xbox Series S
Frame rate (reported) 30fps 30fps 30fps
Resolution Not announced Not announced Not announced, likely lower
Storage About 825 GB to 1 TB 1 TB or 2 TB 512 GB or 1 TB
Disc drive Model dependent Yes No
Exclusive content None announced None announced None announced

There’s no announced content exclusive to either PlayStation or Xbox. Read more about performance in our GTA 6 PS5 Pro guide.

What happens to GTA 5 on PS4 and Xbox One?

GTA 5 and GTA Online still run on PS4 and Xbox One. Rockstar ended GTA Online for the much older PS3 and Xbox 360 in December 2021, but hasn’t announced an end date for the PS4 and Xbox One versions.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of GTA 5 are better looking and faster to load, and you can move your GTA Online character over if you upgrade.

PS4 Pro and Xbox One X can’t run it either

The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X were more powerful versions of last-gen consoles, but they’re still last generation. They use the same slow hard drives and older CPUs, so GTA 6 isn’t coming to them either.

Frequently confused: GTA 5 vs GTA 6 on PS4

Some search results and store listings mix up GTA 5 and GTA 6. If you see “Grand Theft Auto” on the PS4 store, it’s GTA 5, which is still available on PS4 and Xbox One. There is no GTA 6 listing on PS4 or Xbox One stores, and any product claiming to be GTA 6 for those consoles is fake or mislabeled.

Can you buy GTA 6 now and play it later on PS5?

Yes. If you’re planning to upgrade, you can pre-order GTA 6 on your PlayStation or Xbox account now. Digital purchases are tied to your account, not your console, so it will be in your library when you sign in on a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. You just can’t download or play it on a PS4 or Xbox One. Pre-ordering before November 19 also gets you the Vintage Vice City Pack.

The bottom line

GTA 6 is not coming to PS4 or Xbox One. It launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, on November 19, 2026. There’s no announced Switch 2, mobile or cloud version, and PC is reported for early 2027 but not confirmed. If you’re upgrading, a digital-only console works fine, since the physical edition reportedly comes as a download code. Just watch the storage space on Xbox Series S.
