# How many GTA 6 pre-orders have sold? What the 6.45 million estimate does and doesn't tell you

> Sensor Tower's tracker puts GTA 6 at roughly 6.45 million digital pre-orders, almost all of them for the $99.99 edition. Take-Two hasn't confirmed a single number, and its next earnings call won't either.

Grand Theft Auto VI hasn't sold a single copy yet, officially. Unofficially, it may already have outearned most games' entire lifetimes.

As of **October 20, 2026**, market intelligence firm **Sensor Tower** estimates GTA 6 has taken about **6.45 million digital pre-orders** worth roughly **$630 million** across PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, hasn't confirmed any of it. The only official word is that pre-orders "vastly" beat the company's own forecasts.

That gap between a precise-looking estimate and a publisher saying nothing is the story. Here's what the numbers actually measure, where coverage has muddled them, and what you can realistically expect to learn when Take-Two reports on **November 9**, ten days before launch.

## How many GTA 6 pre-orders have sold?

Sensor Tower's tracker, reported by **Insider Gaming** and **TechSpot** on October 20, puts GTA 6 at **6.45 million copies** pre-ordered. Insider Gaming's breakdown splits that into about **4.8 million on PS5** for **$468 million**, and **1.66 million on Xbox Series X|S** for **$162 million**.

The game has been available to pre-order since **June 25, 2026**, so that total covers just under four months. Both the Standard Edition (**$79.99**) and the Ultimate Edition (**$99.99**) count, and both come with the Vintage Vice City Pack as a pre-order bonus. Our [GTA 6 editions guide](/gta-6-editions-price/) covers what separates them.

Two things this number is not. It isn't a Take-Two figure, and it isn't a worldwide count of every copy. The reports describe digital pre-orders on the two consoles, and none of them explain Sensor Tower's methodology in detail. Treat 6.45 million as an informed estimate of digital demand, not a sales chart.

## Where the numbers disagree

If you've seen slightly different figures, you're not imagining it. Coverage of the same Sensor Tower data has drifted in a few places.

**Game Rant** reported the platform split as 76% PlayStation and 26% Xbox. Those add up to 102%, and 4.8 million out of 6.45 million is about **74%**, which is the share TechSpot and Insider Gaming used. The 74% figure is the one that matches the unit counts.

Headlines also round freely. Insider Gaming's own story says "well over $600 million" in its opening line and $630 million in the body. Game Rant says "over $600 million." These describe the same estimate, not two different data points.

The Ultimate Edition share has the same problem. Shacknews reported **89%** in its body and "almost 90%" in its headline. NME gave the platform split as about **90% on Xbox** and **88.5% on PS5**. All of it traces back to an interview Sensor Tower's Karl Kontus gave **GamesIndustry.biz** in August, months before the 6.45 million update, and no outlet has reported whether the share has moved since.

## Why the Ultimate Edition share is so unusual

Premium editions usually sell to a minority of buyers. Kontus, Sensor Tower's head of Video Game Insights, said "Typical premium shares for games tend to be at around 10–20%," according to NME, and called 50% "a great number." GTA 6's estimated share is close to 90%. His reaction, as NME quoted it: "I have never seen a 90% premium share before."

There's a simple way to check the estimates against each other. Divide $630 million by 6.45 million copies and you get an average of about **$97.70** a copy. If 89% of buyers paid $99.99 and 11% paid $79.99, the average would land at about **$97.80**. The revenue and units Sensor Tower reported in October are consistent with the edition split it reported in August.

Our read: the $20 gap is doing a lot of work. Kontus pointed out that the Standard Edition is already above the usual $70 price, which makes $100 feel like a small step up. Add Rockstar's confirmation that some in-game content is exclusive to Ultimate, and a fanbase that has waited more than a decade, and the upsell barely needs selling. Prices vary a lot outside the US, as our [GTA 6 price by country](/gta-6-price-by-country/) page shows, so the split may look different in other markets.

## What has Take-Two actually said?

Very little, on purpose. On its August earnings day, CEO **Strauss Zelnick** said pre-orders "vastly" beat internal forecasts, according to GTA Boom, but gave no figure. Shacknews reported his answer on how pre-orders would turn into sales: "We genuinely don't" know.

He also pointed out that pre-orders can be canceled. That's the main reason no publisher books them as revenue. The money arrives when the game unlocks.

Take-Two's guidance is the more useful official number. In May, it forecast **$8.0 billion to $8.2 billion** in net bookings for fiscal 2027, the year ending March 31, 2027, and said that forecast includes GTA 6 launching in November 2026. It kept that range in August, despite the strong pre-orders. That first quarter ended on June 30, so it captured only the first few days of pre-orders.

That restraint is deliberate. Zelnick's own caveat about cancellations is the reason a pre-order number would be shaky, and a forecast held steady through record demand leaves room to beat it after launch. For how long and costly the road to this launch has been, see our [making of GTA 6 breakdown](/gta-6-making-of-bloomberg/).

## How does it compare with GTA V?

The closest official benchmark is GTA V's launch. In **September 2013**, Take-Two said GTA V made about **$800 million on its first day** and passed **$1 billion in three days**, which it called the fastest any entertainment property had reached that mark. Those were company estimates of worldwide retail sales, as Gematsu reported at the time.

| | GTA V (2013) | GTA 6 (2026, so far) |
|---|---|---|
| Who reported it | Take-Two | Sensor Tower (estimate) |
| What it measures | Worldwide retail sales after launch | Digital console pre-orders before launch |
| First milestone | About $800 million on day one | About $630 million before launch |
| Next milestone | $1 billion in three days | Not yet reported |
| Platforms | PS3, Xbox 360 | PS5, Xbox Series X\|S |

The comparison isn't like for like. GTA V's numbers include every channel after launch, and GTA 6's are a digital-only estimate weeks before it. Still, GTA 6 has reportedly pulled in most of GTA V's record first day before anyone can play it. Prices have also climbed from GTA V's $60 to $80 and $100. Expect GTA 6's day-one number, whenever Take-Two shares one, to be measured against that $800 million.

For context against this year's other big releases, Game Rant notes that Resident Evil Requiem passed 8 million copies by the end of July and Crimson Desert reached 6 million by August. Those are sales after launch, not pre-orders.

## PS5 vs Xbox: what the split means

A 74/26 split looks lopsided, but it's roughly what the hardware gap predicts. Insider Gaming says PS5 has outsold Xbox Series consoles by about three to one, and Game Rant puts PlayStation's share of the console market at about 70%.

Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball said the company is "very happy" with its pre-orders and that they're "matching" its market share, according to Game Rant. On the numbers above, that claim holds up. Xbox isn't underperforming. There are just fewer Xbox consoles. If you're still choosing a console, our [GTA 6 on PS5 Pro](/gta-6-ps5-pro/) guide covers what Rockstar has said about performance.

## What could change before November 19

The 6.45 million figure is a snapshot, and the next few weeks are when pre-order totals usually move most.

- **Preload on November 10.** Digital preload opens nine days before launch, which tends to push late buyers to commit. Our [GTA 6 preload guide](/gta-6-preload/) has the details.
- **A last-week surge.** The total has already grown since the summer, and the final weeks before a big release are when undecided buyers commit.
- **Cancellations.** Zelnick's own caveat. Some pre-orders will be refunded before November 19.
- **Retail copies.** Copies bought in stores aren't part of the digital figures reported so far, so the real total is likely higher.

Forecasts for the full launch are bigger still. TechSpot cites an earlier Piper Sandler estimate that GTA 6 could sell more than 45 million copies at launch, and Insider Gaming cites Newzoo's estimate of up to $5.2 billion in launch-week sales. Both are analyst projections.

## What to watch on November 9

Take-Two reports its second quarter of fiscal 2027 on **Monday, November 9, 2026**, after the US market closes, with a call at **4:30pm ET**. [It's the last investor update before launch](/gta-6-take-two-earnings-november-9/).

Manage your expectations. The quarter covers **July 1 to September 30**, so the results won't include any GTA 6 sales. As GTA Boom notes, the announcement itself doesn't mention the game. Here's what's worth listening for:

1. Whether Zelnick gives any pre-order number or ranking, which would be a first.
2. Whether Take-Two keeps, raises or narrows its $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion forecast.
3. Any comment on the Ultimate Edition skew, since it lifts revenue per copy.
4. Anything on launch-day plans, servers or GTA Online timing.

If history is a guide, the real numbers arrive after launch. For everything else on launch timing, see our [GTA 6 release date](/gta-6-release-date/) page.

## The short version

Sensor Tower estimates GTA 6 had about **6.45 million digital pre-orders** worth roughly **$630 million** by October 20, around 74% of them on PS5 and, by its August count, about 89% for the $99.99 Ultimate Edition. Those figures hang together, since the revenue works out to almost exactly the price mix you'd expect, but they're third-party estimates of digital sales only. Take-Two has said only that pre-orders vastly beat its forecasts, and its November 9 report covers a quarter that ends before launch. The first official number is most likely to come after November 19, measured against GTA V's $800 million first day.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many GTA 6 pre-orders have been sold?

About 6.45 million as of October 20, 2026, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. That's an estimate of digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar and Take-Two haven't published a pre-order number.

### How much money has GTA 6 made from pre-orders?

Sensor Tower estimates roughly $630 million: about $468 million on PS5 and $162 million on Xbox Series X|S. These are third-party estimates, not figures from Take-Two.

### What percentage of GTA 6 pre-orders are on PS5?

About 74%, based on Sensor Tower's estimate of 4.8 million PS5 pre-orders and 1.66 million on Xbox. Some coverage quotes 76%, but that doesn't match the unit figures.

### Are most people buying the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition?

Yes, by Sensor Tower's estimate. It reported in August that about 89% of pre-orders were for the $99.99 Ultimate Edition. Its analyst Karl Kontus said typical premium shares are around 10 to 20%.

### Has Take-Two confirmed GTA 6 pre-order numbers?

No. In August, CEO Strauss Zelnick said pre-orders vastly beat internal forecasts but gave no figure, and noted pre-orders can be canceled.

### Will Take-Two reveal GTA 6 pre-orders on November 9?

Possibly, but don't count on a hard number. The November 9 report covers July to September, before launch, so it won't include GTA 6 sales. Management may comment on pre-order demand during the 4:30pm ET call.
