Three weeks from launch, Edge went inside Rockstar's Edinburgh studio and came back with sixteen pages.

The feature is the cover story of **Edge #430**, the GTA 6 special edition, on sale **October 29, 2026**. According to Vice's breakdown, it describes **police K-9 units**, **fully functioning buses and trains**, pedestrians who react differently by district, **considerably more interiors** than earlier GTAs, and a version of Leonida that nearly matches the **combined playable areas of GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2**.

There's a catch to state up front: almost every gameplay detail below comes through Vice's summary of Edge, not from Rockstar's own channels or verbatim quotes. We separate what's confirmed about the feature itself from what's reported inside it, and flag what still needs checking.

## What is the GTA 6 Edge magazine cover story?

PC Gamer announced the feature on October 27, describing a 16-page cover story built on a visit to Rockstar's Edinburgh development HQ, where Edge spoke with studio leaders and saw GTA 6 running. PC Gamer promised **"exclusive new imagery"** and **"interviews with Rockstar head honchos"**, wrapped in a special gatefold cover with Jason and Lucia artwork. GTABoom, publishing the same day, also describes a gatefold cover and interviews with Rockstar North.

Outlets don't agree on what to call the issue. Vice and PC Gamer say "special edition" or "special issue", while image text on GTABoom's page calls it "Edge's Christmas issue". Whatever the label, it's issue #430.

How you get it depends on where you live. In the UK, the GTA 6 special edition comes free with a subscription. Outside the UK, new subscribers get a free digital copy, per PC Gamer. And PC Gamer says the full feature was set to go free online for everyone on October 29.

Our read: a long print feature landing this close to launch looks like a controlled reveal. We don't know how the access was arranged, but the effect is a wave of coverage in the final stretch without another trailer.

## The map: nearly GTA 4, GTA 5 and RDR2 combined

The headline claim, in Vice's summary, is that Leonida nearly matches the combined playable areas of **GTA 4, GTA 5 and RDR2**.

Two caveats. First, no square-kilometre or square-mile figure appears in the coverage. Rockstar has never published official sizes for those three maps either, and fan estimates vary widely, so any precise number you see today is guesswork. Second, it isn't clear whether "nearly combined" is Rockstar's phrasing or Edge's description.

<Shot id="kalaga-canyon-road" />

Edge's examples point to density as much as size: considerably more interiors than earlier GTAs, working bus and train networks, a day/night cycle significantly longer than GTA 5's, and streets and highways narrowed to feel more realistic. Behind that, separate teams handled fictional brands, billboards, radio ads, TV programming, pedestrians and political campaigns.

The day/night change is the easiest to picture. Our read: a cycle significantly longer than GTA 5's means each stretch of daylight or darkness lasts longer, so a night out in Vice City should feel like a place you spend time in rather than a quick transition between missions.

Rockstar's head of development, unnamed in Vice's piece, reportedly says he still finds areas he has never seen. That's a paraphrase, so treat it as Edge's account rather than a quote. For the regions Rockstar has shown so far, see our [GTA 6 map](/gta-6-map/).

## How pedestrians and NPCs react in GTA 6

Rockstar reportedly set up **a whole studio devoted to NPCs**, and the examples in Vice's summary explain why. Behavior depends on temperament, aggression, location, what a character has witnessed and how you treat them. Pedestrians react differently by district, and some will confront you rather than run.

Weapons are the clearest case. Walking around with a visible shotgun alarms people even if you never aim it, while a gun slung over the shoulder draws less concern than one held in your hands. You can drop the weapon, and some situations give you leeway before a wanted level kicks in.

<Shot id="jason-store-robbery" />

The other encounters described sound like the unscripted moments GTA players share online: robbery victims fighting back, a shopper stepping in during a gas-station holdup, and other drivers challenging you to a street race mid-escape. Characters also show different levels of disgust at their surroundings. The example given is Jason recoiling inside a house a dog has trashed.

That matters because ambient life is where a map that size either feels alive or feels empty. If the NPC work holds up, it's what will make all that space worth exploring.

## Police, heat and the Criminal Profile

Crime gets the most mechanical detail in Vice's summary of Edge, and it adds up to a tougher, more observant world:

- **Police K-9 units** join pursuits.
- The **heat system** tracks your location, clothing and accomplices.
- Some drivers are **armed and resist carjackings**, and some cars have **trackers**.
- You can **incapacitate or intimidate** enemies instead of killing them.

The most interesting addition is a **Criminal Profile** scale running from **"Professional"** to **"Irredeemable"**, shown with angel and devil icons, which can reportedly affect how the story develops. How far it changes the plot, and whether Edge describes it in full, isn't clear yet. Our [GTA 6 gameplay guide](/gta-6-gameplay/) predates this feature, and we'll fold these details in once they can be checked against the full text.

## Jason, Lucia and the RDR2 influence

Switching between protagonists returns from GTA 5: you can **switch between Jason and Lucia**. What's reportedly new is the relationship layered on top. The pair start with a shared emotional history, their closeness is tracked across **four levels**, and whether the criminal life is worth it is a major theme.

This is one of only two points Vice explicitly attributes to Rockstar: the studio says RDR2 strongly influenced GTA 6's storytelling. The two games' development overlapped for several years, the interactive open-world approach goes back to at least 2015, and the Bonnie-and-Clyde-style pairing was settled after RDR2 shipped.

Our read: if RDR2 shaped the storytelling, the NPC studio and the pedestrians who remember what they've witnessed suggest it shaped the world too. The duo fits what Rockstar has shown since Trailer 1 in December 2023, a partnership rather than a solo antihero. Our [GTA 6 characters guide](/gta-6-characters/) covers both of them and the wider cast.

## Cars, fuel, coffee and the WAINK app

Away from the story, the feature also covers the everyday systems around driving and staying on your feet. A service called **Scooter Bros** delivers your vehicles to you, weapons stored in the trunk included, while the **WAINK app** lets you find specific vehicles wanted by criminal fences, with the vehicle's condition affecting the payout.

Fuel is the other point Vice attributes directly to Rockstar: **refueling is quick**, a full tank lasts a long time, and low fuel still leaves some room to keep driving. On foot, **coffee** boosts stamina and **protein shakes** give a health buff.

Our take on the fuel detail: Rockstar appears to want the texture of a working world without turning it into a chore. A tank that drains fast would get old within a week. For what's been shown of the vehicles themselves, see our [GTA 6 cars list](/gta-6-cars/).

## Who said what in the Edge coverage

Because nearly everything reaches us second-hand, here's how solid each piece is.

| Claim | Source level |
|---|---|
| Edge #430, 16 pages, Edinburgh visit, Oct 29 date | Confirmed by PC Gamer |
| RDR2 strongly influenced the storytelling | "Rockstar says", via Vice |
| Fast refueling, long-lasting fuel | "Rockstar says", via Vice |
| Head of development still finding unseen areas | Paraphrase, via Vice |
| Map nearly GTA 4 + GTA 5 + RDR2 combined | Edge via Vice, wording unclear |
| K-9 units, buses and trains, NPC studio, Criminal Profile | Edge via Vice |
| Exact map size, interior count, transport routes | Not given |

We couldn't verify which of these details, if any, appeared in earlier previews, so we aren't labeling anything a first. For details from other recent reports and how they hold up, see our [GTA 6 new gameplay details](/gta-6-new-gameplay-details/) page.

## The new screenshots

Vice counts **over ten new screenshots** in the issue, credited to Rockstar Games, GamesRadar and Edge Magazine. They show Jason and Lucia with guns, a car robbery, a club, a tattoo, bikers, a shark in the ocean, a swamp, a mud rally and the Vice City skyline.

The mix looks like a tour of everything the feature describes: crime, nightlife, wildlife and the backcountry, not just Vice City. Rockstar's earlier official screenshots had already pointed beyond the city, to biker country in Ambrosia.

## What to expect before November 19

GTA 6 launches on **November 19, 2026** on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, at **$79.99** for the Standard Edition and **$99.99** for the Ultimate. The digital preload starts **November 10**, and our [GTA 6 preload guide](/gta-6-preload/) has the details.

Rockstar hasn't announced anything else for the next three weeks. After the launch trailer on October 15 and now Edge, expect more screenshots, preload and file-size details, but none of that is confirmed. Our [GTA 6 release time guide](/gta-6-release-time/) covers when it unlocks where you are, and we'll update this page as more of the Edge text is checked.

## The short version

Edge #430, the GTA 6 special edition, went on sale on **October 29, 2026** with a **16-page cover story** built on a visit to Rockstar's Edinburgh HQ, and PC Gamer says the full feature was set to go free online the same day. According to Vice's summary, it reports **K-9 units**, **working buses and trains**, an NPC studio behind district-specific reactions, a **Criminal Profile** from "Professional" to "Irredeemable", and a map nearly the size of GTA 4, GTA 5 and RDR2 combined. Only the RDR2 storytelling influence and the fuel details are attributed to Rockstar directly, and there's no exact map size. GTA 6 launches **November 19, 2026** on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
