# How to cancel a GTA 6 pre-order on PS5, Xbox and at retailers, and the deadlines that matter

> Changed your mind about GTA 6? You can still get your money back, but on PS5 the real deadline isn't launch day. It's the moment the preload starts downloading. Here's how cancelling works on every store, and the mistakes that cost people their refund.

On PlayStation, the last day to change your mind about GTA 6 probably isn't November 19. It's whenever your console quietly starts downloading the game.

**You can cancel a GTA 6 pre-order and get a refund on PS5, Xbox and at retailers**, but each store has its own rules. The one that catches people out is Sony's: under the PlayStation Store policy, once the main game has started downloading, **including a preload**, the change-of-mind refund is gone. Digital preloading opens on **November 10, 2026**, nine days before launch.

So if you're on the fence, the most useful thing you can do today takes ten seconds: turn off automatic downloads. The rest of this guide covers how to cancel on each store, what you lose, and whether cancelling makes sense at all.

**Cancelling a GTA 6 pre-order at a glance**

| | |
|---|---|
| PS5 digital | Cancel via PlayStation Support before the download starts |
| PS5 deadline that matters | The preload, from November 10, ends the refund |
| Xbox digital | Cancel from Microsoft order history, refund if already billed |
| Xbox billing | Card payments can be charged up to 10 days before release |
| Rockstar Store physical | Cancelled through Xsolla, before it ships |
| Other retailers | Their own policy: cancel before shipping, or return |
| Pre-order bonus | Vintage Vice City Pack is lost if you cancel |

## Can you cancel a GTA 6 pre-order?

Yes, on every platform. There's no special GTA 6 rule here: Rockstar's pre-order FAQ sends purchase and refund questions to whoever sold you the game, so **the store you bought from decides**. That means three different processes depending on where your money went: Sony, Microsoft, or a shop.

The timing matters more than usual this time. GTA 6 has a **nine-day preload window**, starting earlier on Xbox in the Americas, digital copies are billed before launch on some payment methods, and boxed copies are expected to ship around the preload date. Every one of those events can narrow your options.

## How to cancel a GTA 6 pre-order on PS5

There's no "cancel" button on the PlayStation Store. You ask Sony for it.

1. Check your purchase is there: open **Transaction history** or your purchases list in your PlayStation account.
2. Make sure GTA 6 **hasn't started downloading**. If you've already preloaded, stop here: the policy says no refund unless the game is faulty.
3. Go to **PlayStation Support**, choose **Store and refunds**, and ask to cancel the pre-order through the contact form or chat.
4. The refund goes back to your original payment method where possible. Sony says some payment types, including paysafecard, mobile operator billing and money vouchers, are refunded to your **PlayStation wallet** instead.

### The 14-day rule, and why it changes in November

Sony's US policy splits pre-orders into two groups based on when you paid:

| When you paid | How long you can cancel | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| More than 14 days before release | Any time up to the release date | The main game hasn't started downloading |
| 14 days or less before release | Up to 14 days after payment | The main game hasn't started downloading |

For GTA 6, the dividing line is **November 5**. Pay before then and your window runs right up to launch. Pay on or after it and you get 14 days from payment, which can stretch past November 19. Either way, the download condition still applies.

### Preloading on PS5 ends your refund

This is the part worth reading twice. PlayStation's support page says the main content must not have started downloading, **"including pre-loading before release."** Once a single byte of GTA 6 lands on your PS5, a change-of-mind refund is off the table.

The trap is that you might not start it yourself. If **Automatic Downloads** is switched on in your PS5 settings, the console can begin the preload for you at midnight local time on November 10, as Rockstar confirmed on November 3. If you haven't decided, go to **Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates** and turn auto-download off until you have. Our [GTA 6 preload guide](/gta-6-preload/) explains how the preload works if you do want it.

## How to cancel a GTA 6 pre-order on Xbox

Microsoft makes this easier. You can do it yourself.

1. Sign in at **account.microsoft.com** and open **Order history**.
2. Find **Grand Theft Auto VI** and select **Cancel**, then follow the steps.
3. If there's no cancel option, you've probably already been billed. Use Xbox's **refund request form for digital games** instead.

Microsoft's support pages say a pre-order cancelled **after billing but before release** is processed as a refund. Billing itself depends on how you paid. Microsoft account balance is charged immediately; other payment methods can be charged **"up to 10 days before the release date,"** which for GTA 6 means from around **November 9**.

After release, Xbox refunds are reviewed case by case, according to Timesaver.gg's guide. There's no guaranteed window, so if you want out, do it before November 19.

## How to cancel a physical GTA 6 pre-order

Boxed copies follow the shop's rules, not Sony's or Microsoft's.

- **Rockstar Store:** Rockstar Support says physical pre-orders bought from the Rockstar Store are cancelled by following **Xsolla's** pre-order cancellation steps. Xsolla runs the store's payments.
- **Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart and others:** cancel from your order page **before the item ships**. Once it's dispatched, it usually becomes a return under the retailer's normal return policy, which can be stricter for games.

There's a twist to keep in mind. Timesaver.gg reports that GTA 6's boxed copies contain a **download code rather than a disc with the full game**, so once you redeem that code on your account, many retailers will treat the box as used. If you might cancel, don't scratch off or redeem the code.

## What happens to the pre-order bonus if you cancel?

You lose it. PlayStation's policy says extra content included with a pre-order **stops working if you cancel**, and the same logic applies on Xbox. That means the **Vintage Vice City Pack**, the pre-order bonus with both editions, goes with the game. Our [editions and price guide](/gta-6-editions-price/) has the full list of what's in it.

The free month of **GTA+** that reports say comes with digital pre-orders is different. GTA+ is a separate subscription, so cancelling the game doesn't automatically cancel it. If you've claimed it, turn off auto-renew in your PlayStation or Xbox subscription settings, or it will roll over to the paid price.

## Should you cancel, or switch editions instead?

Most people looking up cancellation want one of three things. Here's the honest answer for each.

**You want to upgrade from Standard to Ultimate.** You don't need to cancel. Reports say you can buy the Ultimate upgrade separately later. Cancelling and re-ordering mainly risks losing your place in the preload.

**You want to downgrade from Ultimate to Standard.** Cancelling is the only route, and it's simple on Xbox. On PS5, cancel first, wait for the refund, then pre-order Standard, and make sure you do it before the preload starts so the new order isn't caught by an auto-download first.

**You're worried about the money or the price.** That's a fair reason, and there's no penalty for cancelling. GTA 6 isn't going to sell out digitally, and you can buy it again whenever you like. Our [price by country guide](/gta-6-price-by-country/) shows whether a different store or region would be cheaper for you, and our [affordability index](/gta-6-affordability-index/) puts the price in context.

## What not to do

A few things lose people their refund every big launch:

1. **Leaving auto-downloads on** while you decide, on PS5.
2. **Preloading "just in case"** and planning to cancel later. On PlayStation, that's a final purchase.
3. **Redeeming a boxed copy's code** before you're sure.
4. **Paying an unofficial reseller.** Cheap GTA 6 keys from grey-market sites can't be refunded through Sony or Microsoft, and some are revoked after use. Our [GTA 6 free download guide](/gta-6-download/) covers the scams around launch.

## The short version

You can cancel a GTA 6 pre-order everywhere, but the clock is different on each store. **On PS5**, ask PlayStation Support before the game starts downloading: the preload from **November 10** counts as downloading and ends the refund, so turn off automatic downloads if you're undecided. **On Xbox**, cancel from your Microsoft order history; if you've been billed, it's processed as a refund before release. **Physical orders** go through the shop, or Xsolla for the Rockstar Store, ideally before they ship. Whatever you choose, cancelling removes the Vintage Vice City Pack, and a claimed GTA+ month needs cancelling separately. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can you cancel a GTA 6 pre-order?

Yes. On PS5 you request it through PlayStation Support, on Xbox you cancel from your Microsoft order history, and physical orders are cancelled with the store you bought from. Rockstar Store physical orders go through Xsolla.

### What is the deadline to cancel a GTA 6 pre-order on PS5?

If you paid more than 14 days before release, you can cancel any time before November 19, as long as the game hasn't started downloading. Preloading counts as downloading, so once the November 10 preload begins on your console, the refund is gone.

### Does preloading GTA 6 stop me getting a refund?

On PlayStation, yes. Sony's policy says you can't get a refund once the main part of a pre-order has started downloading, including a preload, unless the game is faulty. Turn off automatic downloads if you're undecided.

### How do I cancel a GTA 6 pre-order on Xbox?

Sign in to your Microsoft account, open Order history, find Grand Theft Auto VI and select Cancel. If you've already been billed, Microsoft says a cancellation before release is processed as a refund.

### What happens to the pre-order bonus if I cancel?

You lose it. PlayStation's policy says extra content included with a pre-order stops working when you cancel, so the Vintage Vice City Pack goes with the game. A free GTA+ month, if you claimed one, is a separate subscription you need to cancel yourself.

### Can I cancel a physical GTA 6 pre-order?

Yes, through the store you ordered from, ideally before it ships. Rockstar says physical pre-orders from the Rockstar Store are cancelled through Xsolla. Other retailers use their own cancellation and return policies.
